Rodrigo Y Gabriela

These two Mexican virtuoso guitarists could easily have fallen into the category of showy, technically dazzling musicians who fail to be moving. But the fact they can take a track as over familiar and hippily histrionic as 'Stairway to Heaven' and through the deft use of dramatic pauses, flamenco flourishes, and Latin sweat, make it gracefully reborn, is certainly impressive. Melodies both familiar and unfamiliar are flirted with, pulled away from, yet always kept in their sights, while the thunder of palms on hollow guitar bodies provides ample percussion. Perhaps it's because their roots are in rock (heavy metal to be precise) there's a tension and swing to their playing which might have been missing if they'd come from, say, a classical tradition. Anyway, if you're a fan of the guitar and the limits it can be pushed to, this storm of an album is for you.
