There was a compilation a few years back called "Do What Thou Wilt Shall Be The Whole Of The Law" (yeah, yeah, Alastair Crowley, man...) of this kind of stuff. A former colleague thought I would "enjoy" it. It was really quite unlistenable. Invaluable, though, if you were writing a long article about music and drugs. As a brief phenomenon, it did spew up Black Sabbath - who were far and away the best of the sorry bunch.

Possibly the first band of this type were from San Francisco - Blue Cheer - who were arguably the most musically inept group to ever land a recording contract with a major label (discuss?) Interestingly, their first album, "Vincebus Eruptum", has enjoyed something of a critical renaissance in recent years, sounding, as it does, far more modern than contemporary recordings by their peers such as Jefferson Airplane or The Grateful Dead. Our resident Californian told me once that everybody liked them back in the day, not so much for their music but because they were so enthusiastic. There's a moral there...
