Greek female vocalists

This is a newish compilation from LYRA which features the leading female artists performing "traditional" songs which I take to be Greek _ _ _ _* music. The line-up includes in a 5-4-4-3 formation on the front Eleftheria Arvanitaki, Yiota Vei, Nena Venetsanou, Eleni Vitali, Savina Yiannatou (not a bad forward line), Glykeria, Lizeta Kalimeri, Melina Kana, Mario, Alkistis Protopsalti, Eleni Tsaligopoulou and Kristi Stasinopoulou as well as several less well-known singers. The notable absentees are Katerina Papadopoulou, Haris Alexiou and Maria Farantouri but that is probably because they have unaccountably never recorded a CD for LYRA. Alkistis Protopsalti (whose wonderful surname means "cantor") is the revelation to my ears, but if you wanted an introduction to modern Greek female singers this would take a lot of beating.
*Insert the four-letter word which dares not speak its name on this forum.

Thanks for this Philellinas. Despite the hint of the word-which-dare-not-speak-its-name, this looks really interesting. I'm in the process of slowly learning about many of these wonderful Greek singers and it looks like this CD would be a crash course for me. But could you provide the name of the CD or a link to it?

Aha! I thought I'd find you here, Gordon! I always check out the female singers you like for I usually like them too.

Thanks for the list, Philellinas, for the names alone look to me like, as Gordon says, a crash course. I've been working my ignorant way through female Greek singers for a while, and the list is quite helpful and now, I'm actually rather proud of the ones I've found on my lonesome.

Hi, Gordon. I thought I might reel you and Judith in with this bait. Here are links to the artefact on the Studio52 web-site:-
http://www.studio52.gr/info_en.asp?infoID=00000d0e
and Xylouris:-

At 13.95 or 16.00 euros + postage it is not exactly cheap but if it is not available from other sources (Amazon, Spotify et al.) it may be worth the investment. I paid more than that in Thessaloniki but I like the artefact and I don't indulge in cherry(pop)picking/downloading but then I am retro-man unimproved by progress.

Hmmm, looks like the very sort of thing my late lamented friend Aki at Trehantiri would have parted me with my money for!

My only advice to add to the above, from experience learned the hard way, is get it from Xylouris. It's probably worth paying extra to actually get the CD (and support a wonderful little shop in Athens with very helpful and friendly staff). After having Studio 52 wait several months after taking money from my card for a CD they didn't actually have in stock, ignore all emails, and apparently only eventually send it because I have a friend in Thessaloniki who went in and remonstrated with them on my behalf, I'm unlkely to ever recommend using them!
