Chango Spasiuk and his band are something of an enigma. Watching them brings as much to mind a classical chamber concert as a 'world music' gig. Here there were Brahmsian harmonies and Schubertian melancholy. Here there was virtuoso musicianship, subtle interplay between instruments and skilful changes in dynamics and rhythm. This was music to appeal to head and heart, and it was magnificent. Across the city, Tinariwen were playing - I didn't care. Chango had seduced me, and I'll catch Tinariwen at Womad. Chango is just fine with me.
