Hi folks,

Melange are playing this Wednesday at Sands Films, 7.45pm. Do hope you can make it. I went to their Via Maris album launch not so long ago at the Vortex and loved it - they really gave a great show. They weren't sounding bad at all either on the radio recently, Radio 3, with Lopa Kothari: http://bbc.in/2dQGmBI

Here's the blurb:

"Exoticism & sheer vivacity...plus the brilliance of the musicianship” are what makes their live shows so exciting - The JazzMann in a recent review of Melange.

Cellist Shirley Smart leads the group, who seamlessly blend music from North Africa, the Middle East and Mediterranean, incorporating jazz improvisation and dynamic arrangements.
Shirley spent 10 years in Jerusalem studying and playing the music of the region and returned to form Melange.

Here in their quartet form, Melange is a collective that is a true reflection of modern cosmopolitanism, comprising musicians from Greece, Spain, Morocco, Iraq, Italy and the UK.

Recent performances include the Songlines Encounters Festival, World Village Festival, IGNITE series at the Royal Albert Hall, St. Ethelburgas, National Theatre, Green Note, Forge, Rich Mix, Wiltons Music Hall, Edge of the World Festival and the Vortex Jazz Club.

Their recently released album "Via Maris" has been critically acclaimed in the press.

" Immaculately played..." FRoots

" ..Exemplary musicianship...and a thouroughly enjoyable listen" Songlines

"Gloriously difficult to categorise....and a complete delight" Adrian Pallant

Melange are comprised of:

Shirley Smart - Cello
Stefanos Tsourelis - Oud
Peter Michaels - Guitar
Demi GarcĂa Sabat - Percussion

The venue is a deliciously sumptuous sofa-filled home-crafted cinema like none other, housed in a beautiful building oozing the history both of the neighbourhood and of costume creation. Even the loos are like none other in London!! Uniquely again, a ticket entitles you to free tea/coffee. Stronger stuff is available at the riverside Mayflower Pub, only a few cobble stones away. Sands Films is an inspiringly intimate place to hear fabulous music.

Doors open 7.15, nearest station Rotherhithe.
