Another series of gigs has just started up at the lovely cinema in Sands Films. Looking forward to the next gig with the talented duo Shirley Smart and Maurizio Minardi. Wed 14th Oct, 7.45pm (doors 7.15). Tickets at £14 include teas/coffee and if your lucky, a comfy sofa! Rotherhithe Station is just a 2 min walk away.

Shirley Smart (cello) and Maurizio Minardi (accordion) present a highly original evening of diverse music, incorporating repertoire from North Africa, the Balkans, Eastern Europe, jazz, tango and more, all re-imagined through jazz-inspired, lively improvisation, as well as their original material.

Shirley is fast becoming known as one of the UK’s most versatile and creative cellists. Originally trained in classical cello under Raphael Wallfisch at the Guilldhall School of Music, and Janos Starker in Paris, she subsequently moved to Jerusalem, where she remained for 10 years, studying and performing a wide variety of world music from the Mediterranean and Middle Eastern region, as well as being highly involved with the jazz and improvised music scene. She has worked with many leading jazz and world music groups, including Antonio Forcione, Gilad Atzmon, Neil Cowley, Julian Ferraretto, Kosmos Ensemble, Robert Mitchell and Alice Zawadski, as well as leading her own projects.

“ A Must-see performer” – Vortex Jazz Club

Multi-instrumentalist and composer Maurizio Minardi has recorded 9 albums and performed with a number of artists including Carmen Souza, Antonio Forcione, the Royal Shakespeare Company, Georgia Mancio.

"...a beautiful album, weaving together jazz, folk and minimalist Classical music - the evocative melodies conjure up lasting images of comedy and pathos." (London Jazz)
