VASSVIK are playing in the UK for the first time, coming to Sands Films on Wed 10th June, 7.45pm (doors 7pm):

Torgeir Vassvik plays orginal compositions and traditional tunes, combining joik and the Sami drum with throat joik and natural sound. He presents this together with some of Norway's most innovative musicians. He comes all the way from Finnmark, the northernmost point of the Norwegian mainland, a stormy and barren landscape hidden in darkness through the winter. The polar sunlight that shines day and night throughout the summer months never manages to raise temperatures to those normally associated with summer. Vassvik is a Sami artist whose soundscapes mirror the extraordinary land that is his home. So comrades the joik story continues...!

This venture has seen much success and the band has travelled to France, Poland, Estonia, Japan, Germany, Russia, Siberia, Belgium, Iceland, Hungary as well as within Norway.

Here's a quote from multi-instrumentalist Andrew Cronshaw (who coincidentally is coming to play in the same venue just two weeks later):

"For those in or near London, I hugely, unreservedly, recommend this. Torgeir Vassvik, a Sámi from the northernmost part of Norway, is one of my favourite performers, magnificent, magnetic and quirky with a unique, intense, primal approach to joik, and with a fab, unusual band of string players.
And the venue, in a quiet old enclave of Rotherhithe by the river, is unusual, too: the viewing theatre of Sands Films, who make costumes for historical dramas; intimate, ornate, with very comfortable sofas."
