On Sunday August 31 Princes Amongst Men is honoured to present a legend of London folk and blues, Wizz Jones. Wizz learnt his trade in 1950s Soho then followed the Beat route to Paris and Morocco before returning to 1960s London where his fluid, folk-blues guitar picking would influence Eric Clapton, Keith Richards and many more. Over the decades Wizz has recorded many albums and played thousands of gigs, found Bruce Springsteen singing his songs and never forsook his roots or lost his musical vitality.

It's an honour to have Wizz come and play my night - I'm thinking he will be the oldest performer I've booked (so far!). Please come along and enjoy Wizz. As ever, free entry and all welcome.

He is really very good, and very under-recognised. He's played a big part in the development of British folk blues music, and been on the road for at least fifty years.

Here's the Wizz Jones song that Bruce Springsteen was performing (at least in Germany), "When I Leave Berlin". Gawd knows how Springsteen (or his team) picked up on it. Pity he never recorded it, even as an extra track - the financial benefits would have been well deserved. Ian A. Anderson produced the 1973 album.

Anyway, well done for booking him, Garth. It'll be a great evening. If you don't enjoy I personally guarantee you your money back.

Hope to get there Garth. Surprise surprise, BS's version of 'When I Leave Berlin' is longer than Wizz's!

I hope you can make it, Ally. And Norman and everyone else near London at the end of the month. I have never seen Wizz perform but am aware he plays South London pubs so contacted him through his website several months ago offering him any Princes month he fancied - he chose August. I have emailed him since to check he is still up for it and he says he has listed it on his website! Very excited about this. Must say I'm incredibly fortunate to get the likes of Wizz and TV Smith and Big Joe Louis (and many lesser known names) at the Ritzy - heroes of London music!

Last saw Wizz Jones when he took over from an indisposed Davy Graham at the Troubadour in Earl's Court a few years ago. Looking forward to seeing him again in the Ritzy at the end of the month.

Norman alerted me to this fine, if too brief (6.30), Radio 4 report on Wizz Jones: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p025gynj
Radio 4 must have had a look to see who I had booked for the Ritzy! This Sunday from 8pm-11pm. Free entry. Hope to see some of you there!
