Appropriate with everyone posting about veteran musicians and the debate about The Slits that TV Smith will be performing at my Ritzy night on June 29. Smith, as I'm sure most forumistas know, was the founder, songwriter and vocalist of The Adverts, one of the original UK punk bands and one of the best - One Chord Wonders, No Time To Be 21, Gary Gilmore's Eyes, Safety In Numbers: an astonishing run of singles that stand as great, primitive r&r. While Crossing The Red Sea With The Adverts is one of the best albums of that era. The Adverts were from the West Country and while having a female punk icon in bassist Gaye Advert lacked the fashion sense and hip connections that London bands the Pistols, Clash, Slits possessed. But they made their mark and TV Smith has continued solo, releasing some outstanding songs - Tomahawk Cruise being one of the best anti-war songs ever recorded - touring hard, taking the music to the people. So it is an honour to have him at The Ritzy. Free entry. TV Smith on stage by 9pm.

Nice guy too, I met him and Gaye back in the day. They were very real and friendly people. Gaye just wanted to talk about Iggy Pop who she worshipped!

Garth, sadly I'm away (OK Paris). Would have loved to see Mr Smith. I've fond memories of seeing The Adverts in Newcastle at the time of 'Gary Gilmore's Eyes'. Someone in the crowd chucked a bottle, TV gave him a mouthful and was about to take it further, the chucker picked up the vibe that the crowd was with TV and scarpered; so the band played on. A really good band live. Didn't Gail Advert end up working for Wandsworth council at one point?

I'll be in a muddy field at the Glasto festival, so can't make this one unfortunately. TV Smith has written some great songs and is always an energetic & enthusiastic live performer. The excellent TV Smith/Adverts doc screened during BBC4's Punk Britannia season is well worth a view (recent Princes Amongst Men performer David Sinclair is one of the interviewees). Must check TV Smith's website to see if I can see him live somewhere else this year.

One thing I always wanted to ask him that used to perplex me back in the day. How come he was a "Bored Teenager" in the summer of 1977 but by the end of the year he was complaining about there being "No Time To Be 21"? There seems to be a logistical shortfall there somewhere.

I will ask such questions when i meet the man! I believe TV and Gaye remain a couple - the reason there has never been an Adverts reformation is she does not want to play again (some form of stage fright, I believe). Never met him but hear good things about him as performer and man - definitely an exciting artist to have at the Ritzy!
