In the far off days when, as young men, we had no flats or houses of our own, our sex lives were dependant on the privacy afforded by our cars. A mate used to joke that the cold weather and the inefficient heater in his VW Beetle limited his sexual activity to that period that fell between the F.A.Cup final and the end of the final test match. It feels a bit like my gadding about to gigs is beginning to fall into this same time zone so I'm hopeful of making a rare appearance at this one - perfect timing.

"Out with a girl in a country lane
And, damn! the car won't start
It might be fun in the back of a van
But in a bubble car it's an art" - The Commuters "Bubble Car"

(The Commuters were a great punk r'n'b band from Hemel Hempstead who I was privileged to see live many times in the late 70s. One of the best bands who never made it past one indie single.)

I couldn't unfasten her safety belt.
All the way home I held a grudge
With a safety belt that wouldn't budge."

Priceless poetry.

So let me get this right, you're likening the gigs I put on to cheep adolescent sexual activity in a poorly insulated car?

Nice one, Jamie (the gig and the retort). This looks like a great show and it's nice to see that Little George is performing. It seems like it's been awhile.

If this was facebook - god forbid - I could just lazily click that I liked that retort too. Instead I have to go to the long-winded effort of typing all this to say 'thank you Jamie' for giving me the biggest laugh out loud so far this weekend. Of course, I could have just lazily typed LOL, but I'm making an effort here.

I don't even know why I am reading this thread as there is no more chance of me getting to the gig than there is of me getting any adolescent sexual activity in a poorly insulated car.

It didn't start out like that, but you know, don't knock it. You can't beat cheap thrills, and, whilst I may yearn for both, your gigs do have the distinct advantages of being available, less subject to negotiation, and at least marginally less of a shambles.
I look forward to witnessing The Shout Collective in all its Jubolympic Glory.

Thanks Will. I was looking for the Billy the Kid Emerson version, but couldn't find it and decided that Ry with Flaco Jimenez was a good substitute.

I'll make a point of playing one version or another of this song at Jamboree on 23rd June and dedicate to all those who have to trudge home on public transport after the gig!
