Awalé play horn-driven dancefloor filling Afro-funk with a global twist and a distinctly urban sensibility: talking in Afrobeat, North African, Congolese, Ethiopian, Latin Jazz and Balkan grooves. Tonight they’ll be welcoming some very special guests to the stage of Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen, to celebrate the launch of their already acclaimed debut album Just Have to Grow.
Formed in London in 2009, Awalé reflect the capital’s multiculturalism, with members from Tunisia, Cuba, France, Slovakia and England. They have been feted by the likes of Lopa Kothari (BBC Radio 3), Cal Jader (Movimientos) and the late, great writer and broadcaster Charlie Gillett. Their album was co-produced by Nick Page (Dub Colossus/Syriana) and offers a refreshing 70s funk influenced take on the Afro-Global sound.
On the decks: DJ Jamie Renton (of the legendary Chilli Fried sessions) will be taking your feet on a globe-spanning tour of beats and pieces, starting in Africa and moving on to everywhere.
