An evening of African Classical Music with the composer and Kora Maestro, Tunde Jegede and the gifted, young guitarist and vocalist, Maya Jobarteh. The concert follows a journey through the meditative and haunting music of the Kora (21 stringed Harp-lute) from the ancient to the contemporary.
TUNDE JEGEDE plays the cello, kora and percussion. Tunde’s engagement in African music is deeply rooted in the oral tradition, whereby musi...cal learning and communication is passed on through playing, singing and listening to live music, rather than by writing it down or recording it electronically. Learning music in the African oral tradition involves practise of techniques, melodies, rhythms, improvisation and styles of ornamentation. The oral tradition also teaches repertoire – the songs and pieces that have been composed and passed down over the centuries – as well as music philosophy, and the spiritual practices of the shaman.
Sona/Maya Jobarteh is a member of one of the five principal Kora-playing (Griot) families from West Africa. She is the granddaughter of the Master Griot of his generation, Amadu Bansang Jobarteh, and cousin of the well-known, celebrated Kora player Toumani Diabate and sister to the reknown Diaspora kora player, Tunde Jegede. She has studied the Kora since the age of three, and gave her first performance at London’s Jazz Café when she was four.
