This was one of my favourite things too - Bill Frisell, Jalimady Tounkoura, and who was the violinist?. Sadly I did not witness it live but saw it once on tv. For some reason I assumed it would become readily available on cd or dvd, or would at least be repeated on tv, but have yet to witness it a second time. It was a beautiful concert.

Jenny Scheinman, who cropped up recently in the discussion on practice.

NOTE: Tom Russel's birthday

March 5, 1953 is the date listed in Wikipedia, rather than 1940 as is listed here. However, the wikipedia article states the year of birth, 1953, is dubious.

And here's the second half -

17: 1947 - Ian Gomm (Chiswick, London) Brinsley Schwarz (1 of 3)
18: 1936 - Robert Lee Smith (Atlanta, Georgia?) The Tams

19: 1937 - Clarence "Frogman" Henry (Algiers, New Orleans)
20: 1951 - James "Jimmie" Vaughan (Dallas) The Fabulous Thunderbirds

One who deserves inclusion solely on the basis of his musical contribution (notably Barbara Lynn & The Sir Douglas Quintet) unless it is felt inappropriate . I had assumed he was still imprisoned, but he turned up in the BBC Latin Music series talking about Freddy Fender -

10: 1929 - Huey P. Meaux ("outside of" Kaplan, Louisiana) producer

One posthumous nomination -

26: 1950 - Theodore "Teddy" Pendergrass Sr. (Philadelphia) [died 13 January, 2010]

I've still not finished. (When I get towards the bottom of the screen I find that I cannot see what I'm typing - a serious disadvantage for someone as ham-fisted as myself).

Whilst reading through the previous 7 pages I noted a few birthdays (there may be more) that haven't been updated on the main list -

04: 1921 - Halim El-Dabh (Cairo)
20: 1949 - Marcia Ball (Orange, Texas)
25: 1929 - Cecil Taylor (New York City) (alternative date - 15th March)

Also Judith your last four birthdays from above (i.e. Ornette Coleman to Sam Lay) need to be added to the main list.

Finally, two more who have left us over the past twelve months -

23: 1928 - Willie Mitchell (Ashland, Mississippi) [died 5 January, 2010]
27: 1914 - Budd Schulberg (New York City) [died 5 August, 2009]

OK, I'm done with March.

Sorry I interrupted, John - I guess you were just poised to record Carl Smith's passing. And congratulations on digging out all those other names. If there was ever a championship for birthday researchers, in the words of Budd Schulberg . . .

ALL MARCH UPDATES

Thanks for spotting that John, but as Charlie is the one who made the initial post rather than myself, he's the only one who can get back in and do any editing of the list. What we can do though is keep the notes clear so when he does get to it, he doesn't have to wade through posts to see what needs to be added. So, I'll create one cohesive list*** and include my above four you mention as well as all the information you and Mike have included between that Thurs Apr 02 2009 post and this one so Charlie only has to look in one place to cut and paste:
