Mark Orton:
Can't believe Ralph Carney has passed. I was so incredibly happy when he moved to Portland. He was the sweetest, kindest and funniest - I loved sessions with him - one of the last at my place he was playing bass saxophone and took a bunch of time out to show off the giant horn to my 10 yr old son - completely hamming it up for him like no one else could. His playing is beyond soulful - phrasing like no other - case and point on the linked Mancini-esque cue we did together for the Costa Rican film "Entonces Nosotros" last year. I've been deeply in love with his playing since I first heard "Way Down In The Hole" off Tom Waits' "Frank's Wild Years" - so many contributions to great music through the years (PJ Harvey, Kronos Quartet, Elvis Costello, St. Vincent etc.) - then getting to see him play in SF with myriad projects (especially Oranj Symphonette) I was looking forward to making music with him for years to come. My heart goes out to Megan Hinchliffe. RIP Ralph.
