She had been a member of the Southern Harp Gospel Singers for eleven years, prior to joining Johnny Otis in 1950 on the recommendation of the singer she was replacing, Little Esther Phillips.

Went into the theatre in the 1970s notably her one-woman show “Me and Bessie” (Smith) - she had seen Bessie perform in 1936
