BBC Radio Awards for World Music 2008 - Nominations

anybody knows why nominees was announced so early ? It's only start of November and I am sure that they can be lots of big discoveries this year too... :?

It's always announced at the end of Womex weekend, the very end of October. This is because the voting academy is all the Womex registrants, giving a potentially massive (2800 this year) international, transparent and hopefully unmanipulatable panel of wide tastes and expertise. After the first year of the Awards, the powers that be decided to close voting just before Womex starts rather than at the end of the weekend in order to avoid a "Womex effect" whereby artists who'd just done successful showcases (and indeed been lucky enough to get showcases) had an advantage by being fresh in people's minds.

The Album Of The Year gets voted for later and isn't announced until 1st December.

Anybody want to have a bash at guessing the results?

Hint: they will all be exactly as you would expect, except for one category, in which the winner will be the one you least expect.

Meanwhile, it's much harder to anticipate the nominations for next year. The more I listen to Umalali: The Garifuna Women's Project, the better it sounds. It might just be even better than Andy Palacio's album. Could this be nominated for the Americas next year as well?

The winners of the seventh annual BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music were announced at a ceremony at London Dingwalls on Thursday 10 April hosted by BBC Radio 3’s Mary Ann Kennedy.

At Dingwalls to accept their Planet Awards were Sa Dingding, Son de la Frontera, Juldeh Camara, Justin Adams, Mayra Andrade, Francis Falceto. Bassekou Kouyate made a surprise appearance to collect his two awards and Rachid Taha was presented his award by Joe Strummer’s widow, Lucinda. There was also a special tribute to Andy Palacio who sadly passed away earlier this year.

The evening included live performances from Kaushiki Chakrabarty who won an Award for World Music in 2005 and Mayra Andrade, Justin Adams & Juldeh Camara and Rachid Taha who closed proceedings with an hour long set.

Highlights of the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music are broadcast on Friday 11th April, on BBC Radio 3, 7.00 – 8.45pm.

Details of the annual winner’s concert were also announced, which for the first time will be held at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms on Wednesday July 30th.

The awards do not end there; voting for the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music Audience Award opens on Friday 11th April, closing on Thursday 8th May. Decided by members of the general public, the winner of the Audience Award is chosen from the 27 nominees across all categories. Votes can be made online at www.bbc.co.uk/radio3/worldmusic/a4wm2008/

The winner of the Audience Award will be announced on BBC Radio 3 in a World Routes special on Saturday 5th July recorded on location in the winner’s home country where they will be presented with the award.

The winner of the Audience Award will be invited to join fellow 2008 Planet winners Sa Dingding, Bassekou Kouyate & Ngoni Ba, Son de la Frontera, Mayra Andrade and Justin Adams & Juldeh Camara performing at the BBC Proms on Wednesday July 30 for A World Music Celebration: The Winners of the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music, at the Royal Albert Hall.
