Are All Drummers This Stupid ?

Apologies to all drum-thumpers, the title of this thread's just misleading clickbait.......

Anyway, the other day on Facebook, a friend put up a 60s TV clip of Vanilla Fudge doing their so-po-faced-it's-almost-epic cover of The Supremes mighty and majestic 'You Keep Me Hangin' On'. (See below for Ver Fudge in all their glory.) Anyway, one thing led to another and on Wikipedia I found Carmine Appice, Fudge drummer and evidently very stupid man, saying this about the difference between the two versions:

"We used to slow songs down and listen to the lyrics and try to emulate what the lyrics were dictating. That one was a hurtin’ song; it had a lot of emotion in it......If you listen to “Hangin’ On” fast… by The Supremes, it sounds very happy, but the lyrics aren’t happy at all. If you lived through that situation, the lyrics are definitely not happy."

Which leads me to ask: how can a man professionally play music for half a century and know so little about it ??? Has anybody in the history of the world other than Carmine Cloth-Ears ever heard The Supremes original and thought it was happy ? It's one of the defining records about anguish and heartbreak, for god's sake!!

And here be Los Fudgeos, turning something happy-clappy and by silly girls into something BIG and BUTCH and ROCK:

(Incidentally, nice how that clip proves you CAN be a pop star and still be fucking ugly!)

(By the way, feel free to use this thread for all your old drummer jokes)

I think that on record it was much slower and dirge like than that live clip. Everything is wrong about their version of this song yet I love the sound. Nothing more wrong than the shocking scarves and hairstyles though.

I don't disagree with your comments, Andy, but I really love this version. Especially - I hope you're not disgusted to know - the drumming. The haircuts and costumes, well.... I can only match it against this great song by Lorenzo St. DuBois, which I will post at any opportunity

In my not inconsiderable experience of all types of musicians I would say that drummers are far from stupid. They do tend, however, to be a bit mad.

Guitar players are generally more stupid (and more inclined to believe themselves to be pretty damn clever - hem-hem...)

Here's Wilson Pickett's Vanilla Fudge inspired take -

As I've said before - You Keep Me Hanging On by Vanilla Fudge (produced by the great Shadow Morton) is better heard and not seen - the Fudge very much took their sound from the (Young) Rascals I think. And stupid people have often made good records.

Hear, hear!! And clever people have made some unspeakably bad records.

Best drummer joke ever is very rude but I know we're all grown-ups here:

What's the difference between a drummer and a gynaecologist?
A gynaecologist only has to deal with one c*** at a time...
