I Got Stung

So off to the superb Bush Halls to see She Keeps Bees, a semi-blind punt this. My only info on the band was a Youtube listen to one song. I liked that enough to risk it and there's something to be said for little knowledge, at least disappointment can be less. I'm not sure who the opening act were, a woman playing baritone guitar and keyboards with a guy on drums. She muttered her name once and the title of her album was I think 'Ermmm...' Hey ho her stuff was vaguely interesting, but only very, very vaguely. Sort of slightly waily, arty, electronicy. Next a trio of young Brit women and bloke drummer, Landship. Rocky, punkish, enthusiastic. Good guitarist, fun band. Now onto She Keeps Bees, the singer/songwriter is Jessica Larrabee, she plays guitar, keyboards and percussion. Hey there's a guy on drums (Andy Laplante), I'm sesnsing a pattern here. Then I notice a third (temporary) band member on key-boards and rhythm guitar. It's the mutterer from the first act, she's still hiding behind her hair, but smiling now. She's called Sylvie. The band are great, Larabee has a great voice and writes a mean song. She's got a really good line in stage chat and they seemed to be relishing the evening. I suddenly realised there's a sense of Grace Slick in there. Not a copy, or pastiche, a 'sense'. She is the band, bluesy, soulful, rocky. They did several songs with only tambourine accompaniment, bluesy, gospelish, she really can sing. The crowd loved it! I loved it. I'm hooked, stung. Ahhh...

Aaah, that's nice, Aly. I must admit when I saw your heading the first thing that came into my head was: "holy smoke, a land sake's alive, uh never thought this could happen to me".
But you knew that...

Thanks for the review, Aly. They do sound nice. And I loved the voice too. Here's a live for the radio clip:

I'm partial for that kind of atmospheric americana sound in general too, so I wasn't hard to win over...

Thanks Karl, that brought it all back. I'm going to try to dig out some of the accapella stuff. Adam, yup.
