Steve York bassist on Dr John's great album (whatever Garth cares to opine!), over at the other place today:

" Yes. it was recorded as three albums. One album was basically acoustic with
Dr John (Mac) playing acoustic piano, Eric Clapton playing acoustic
guitar, and me playing an acoustic bass guitar from around 1850, plus
Fred Staehle on drums and various backup singers, percussion and horns.
The producer was Charlie Greene who managed Sonny and Cher. he took off
with the tapes and mixed them and handed it to Atlantic as a single
album. i worked with Mac in New York in the early 80's and he told me
that the tapes with all three albums were in storage in LA and he was trying to get them at that time, but they disappeared."

One of the great losses of musical history. The released version is an album that has frequently amused me. It would be great if there was longer, more subtle experience to be had of that particular psychomusical universe.

Mac's own personal "Magnificent Ambersons". I don't think he ever fully recovered from it.
