Adam Blake wrote:Having been guilty of it myself, I have no patience with white people reserving for themselves the right to set the agenda of black music.

Agreed. But whitey doesn't usually care about setting the agenda for black music because he's more concerned with stealing its best bits, diluting them and making load of money out of it. Been happening since Sam Phillips and Elvis (and probably even before that - Al Jolson?)

More politically problematic, of course, when it comes to criticising black African performers such as Youssou for trying to 'whiten' their music and releasing different versions of their records for domestic and international (read 'white') audiences...

Pete Fowler and I met up in a pub yesterday, and this thread was discussed - and informing a third party non SOTW participant - what keeps us coming back.

I was thinking about funk on the way home -and reminded myself to dig out Howard Goodall's How Music Works (part 4 Bass) reference. He uses James Jamerson (Funk Bros) to illustrate the use of bass.
From about 35 minutes into https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fIWEGYDG-Ig you get the Funk Bros with Gladys Knight & Pips doing Grapevine

but you would have just missed Miles's So What from Kinda Blue - with Paul Chambers on bass "shaping the whole piece".

Gladys's Grapevine is on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ah1cvL_ez-M - eat your heart out Marvin.

I saw the programme too, and was cringing at some of the commentary as I had been looking forward to seeing it. As has been mentioned before it, I too was disappointed that The Meters, and War were overlooked. What about what was called Go-Go; undeniably funky; bands like Chuck Brown & The Soul Searchers, Trouble Funk, especially in the late 1970s seeming to emerge from the Washington DC area as far as I recall. I think they gave the funk scene a much needed booster shot by the 1980s. In fact I saw Trouble Funk at the old Town & Country Club. One of the funkiest bands I've been fortunate to see perform -they were absolutely amazing!

Here are my suggestions for funky stuff that doesn't often get an airing:

The wonderful Hank Ballard. Is James Brown returning a favour here? With the JBs "From The Love Side"

This one is from a band called Maxayn from the early 1970s. The singer is called
Maxayn Lewis from Tulsa, Oklahoma (she used to perform under the name Paulette Parker with Bobby "Blue" Bland). This song, "Trying For Days" has a message sadly still relevant today.

The Junkyard Band, "Word". These guys were very young at the time of the recording. Anyway, I tried to find the best sounding version I could find. Incidentally, I was reminded of the Dixie Cups as it was playing, having heard the suggestion by Norman. http://youtu.be/GpObBaJI-3w
