Everywhere I look at the moment I'm confronted by the image of Ed Sheeran. Even Infomania at the back of the Guardian Guide is about him. I first came across him on Later, a complete unknown, about three years ago. Our Ed's got a bloody good agent. I'm not personally grabbed by his stuff, but nor was I by Oasis or Will Young. At least it was/is their job. They may grab a great deal more than their fair share of media coverage, but that's the biz init? I'm more vexed by non-musicians entering the fray and grabbing large slices of an ever decreasing cake (numerous posts passim). Recent examples are Bad Shepherds who seemed to be booked for every festival in the world this year. I was given a copy of their first album, god Ade's voice just didn't cut the mustard. More like a hopeful, but not too good hopeful on open mic night. I just don't believe they would have had a 10th of their success if the singer was Billy Noname. The band are perfectly adequate, but... Then there's New Orleans bluesman and king of the keyboards Hugh Laurie. His voice isn't just weak like Ade's, he can't sing in tune. There are others, but enoughs enough. The drag is there's so few chances for the real aspirants, or the pros already slogging away. I abhor censorship so wouldn't 'ban' them, I just want a bloody good moan about it.

I've just one thing to say to you, Aly, not that I want to get you going or anything:

Jamie Cullum
