STICKCHOPS - A recommendation.

STICKCHOPS - The clue is in the name. Two great vibraphone players, Anthony Kerr and Orphy Robinson, held together by Clark Tracey on the drum kit. They did their first gig here at the Hertsjazz Festival last Sunday. It started off messy and edgy and ended up being, for me at least, absolutely spellbinding. Truly A MOMENT!

Whether you'd call them vibraphones or not I don't know because these were electronically modified instruments giving them more octaves and a bigger sound palate to play with. There were PC screens in evidence, switches and pedals whose temperamentality initially hampered the playing. I know....it sounds dreadful doesn't it? But it was just wonderful. A whole world of music opened up in three improvised pieces that seemed to me to reference Terry Riley, Sun Ra, even Pink Floyd. There were flashes of African marimba and steel pans amongst other things. Some of it was industrial, some pastoral, and some spells of solid groove. Wonderfully skilled players.

I hope they persevere and keep this thing going and I hope you'll get to see them.

Cool. Sounds great. I know Clark Tracey wouldn't do it if it wasn't worthwhile.
