I don't remember seeing you at The Roy Brown gig, Leon. I know you well enough to guess it wasn't Roy "Chubby" Brown.

Roy Brown was on Honky Tonk that year, in conversation with Charlie Gillett - here's a link to a download of the show http://bootsalesounds.blogspot.co.uk/20 ... -6878.html

1978 would have been - what - two years after Punk's Year Zero, yet you were still seeing all those visiting (and even resident) blues players, and hardly any punk/new wave. It pretty much matches my year too, though Ian Dury and Elvis Costello were on the list.

some live bands from around then in this neck of the woods:
XTC, Scritti Politti (early formation), the Cure (early formation), Red Krayola, The Pop Group, The Ruts, Creation Rebel, The Fall, The Photos, Random Hold, Hardware, X Ray Spex, Lilliput/Kleenex, Stiff Little Fingers, and others I can't quickly recall right now

I saw them in Chislehurst Caves; it must have been some time around about 1978. Probably the same visit.

they had an incredibly good drummer - Jesse (somethingorother), I think. I looked him up on the web some years ago, and was sad to see he'd died. I think The Krayola have a reputation for being variable, but that night in or around 78, they were great

I had mate who kept trying to drag to see Kilburn and the High Roads before 1978 but don't recall if I did or not. I did see Elvis Costello in Sight and Sound concert but he just played brand new stuff and none of his hits. This did not go down so well with the crowd and we left feeling cheated but then hey! it was a free gig.

I even sat whole set of John Mills including 'Music Was My First Love' thinking about it now sounds like Self`-torĀ“ture.

I think I saw my first international band in 1978 - Cheap Trick. Blew my mind - flying guitars and such! Beyond that lots of local punk and pub rock bands. The Members came to NZ in 1979 - the first of the "punk/new wave" bands to make it down there. Funny how isolated we were.

I was going to about four gigs a week in 1978. Nearly all pubs in London. I even did a few myself.

I remember being on a bus to Stoke Newington in 1978 trying to get to a pub where The Members were playing. We sat up top at the front because we didn't know the stop and the driver told us he'd flash his lights when we got there, so we were staring down through the window expecting a flash from the headlights.

It was a relief when he flashed the inside lights...

Green Lanes. I saw The Commuters there. They were fantastic.

I think 79 and 80 were my favourite years for live music (The Clash and The Ramones on consecutive Wednesdays!!) but 78 was pretty good - Pere Ubu, Tom Robinson Band, Wreckless Eric and, erm, Deke Leonard's Iceberg.

Red Krayola live in Paris 1978. Same line-up as seen in Uk that year, with Jesse Chamberlain on drums:

78/79 were as Andy (almost!) says peak years for live music in the Uk. The 80s were fairly diabolical in comparison. YMMV, or some such weasily acronym
