Yes, he's having a massive clear out but I don't think he's broke. I think the proceeds will mostly go to his children's charity: The Lotus Foundation. Ringo always did like kids, and I think the feeling is mutual.

Actually, no, he was still using his Premier kit then; the Ludwig kit which he started using in 1963 is the one being auctioned. And Ringo did play drums on the take used for the original UK 'Love Me Do' single; the take with Andy White (who sadly died just a few days ago, aged 85) on drums, and Ringo on tambourine was issued on the "Please Please Me with Love Me Do and 12 other songs" LP (and then often on reissues).
