Forgive me if you've been here before, but this made its way to my ears for the first time today and it is lovely.

ΜΑΡΙΑ ΑΝΑΜΑΤΕΡΟΥ: ΚΑΤΣΙΦΟΡΑΣ. Which is apparently about a unique kind of fog which descends upon Naxos. I wish I could create something as haunting and beautiful about the snow which descends upon Fukushima.

Re: Greek and Turkish music thread - Selda

Postby kastamonu » Wed Jan 18, 2012 12:59 pm

[quote="tulsehill charlie"]Strong stuff. There's a good biography here http://psychanatolia.wikia.com/wiki/Selda_Ba%C4%9Fcan

Thanks to TH Charlie - enjoyed this and filled in a lot of gaps for me. Quite a lady!

İncidentally (veering off course as per...) I have a very good friend here (Mehmet) in his 60's now - he was at Ankara Uni with a lot of these people (not least Deniz Gezmiş - one of the last men to be hanged in Turkey) - all intellectuals, political activists on the left at the time. Deniz G's story is a long one but very interesting - a lot of stuff has been written and filmed about his life - now acceptable to watch/take an interest in this.

Hope you have more wonderful visits to Turkey.

Short film about Deniz G - (& after a beautiful song almost certainly dedicated to him by Selda)

interesting to learn about Deniz Gezmiş, there've been 2 films made about him, and many many songs. His final words apparently were:

"Long live a fully independent Turkey! Long live Marxism-Leninism, long live the Turkish and Kurdish peoples of the brotherhood! Long live the workers, peasants! Down with imperialism! "

Thank you, Chris, for clearly marking the distinction between the Piraeus style and Smyrneika. Other explanations have only made me more confused.

Lots of interesting stuff and beautiful music between that post by Chris and this one by me. I'm only part way through and am going back into it to listen and read.

Ditto, same same, I agree with Pauline. What an utterly marvelous video. I do hope those who don't follow this thread closely check it out.

Apologies if this has been covered already, I've not been keeping up.

I know there were some Martha Mavroidi fans here. Just had her very nice new CD in, this time pared down to a basic jazz trio of her on electric lafta & saz, plus stand up bass & drums.

Chris - there'll be a review copy in the post to you shortly! Hope you like it - am fixing up to do an interview before long.

Meanwhile, some visuals.

Woot! Her 'Garden of Rila' album is one of my favourites of the last decade - was only enjoying and marvelling at it a couple of nights ago. Those clips are fine, but removing my tendency to favour everything she does & trying to be objective, they don't have the variety or alchemy of tune and arrangement that Rila has. All the same, anticipate the album'll be a good un - great singer, great lafta lute player (& still would be even if there were thousands instead of a handful playing it!)

London's Trio Tekke take on what they're calling Reggetika (rebetika meets regg.. you've already worked it out), as a label of convenience rather than much accuracy:

edit: see Youtube clip in next post

They're great, looking forward to their May tour. Now that the Family Elan have become a loud power trio of greek/levantine/turkic sounds, Trio Tekke can slip into the slot that Family Elan could have inhabited if they'd resisted turning amps up to '11'
